Let’s face it, owning pets requires purchasing many things that are not so eco-friendly. But being eco-friendly isn’t black or white. It’s about doing what you can from where you are.
For example, I don’t eat meat but I love leather shoes and buy my cat fresh meat. I love buying from local artists and small businesses but am a sucker for H&M and Target products often. It’s not being a hypocrite and shouldn’t be about judging others. When I find companies making good eco-friendly products I want to share and praise them as great options.
Below are just a few eco-friendly products in the litter box category.
Eco-friendly Disposable boxes. While I don’t think using these disposable boxes permanently makes much sense. They are a great option for temporary situations such as traveling, cat sitting or fostering cats. They are both made of 100% biodegradable recycled paper. The recommended use is about 4 weeks.
Kitty’s WonderBox Medium size $8.79 3-pack
Nature’s Miracle – Jumbo size $9.02 2-pack
This Van Ness Eco Large Cat Litter Pan is made entirely from plant materials and colored with soy-based ink and is also biodegradable when in a landfill. While it is bio-degradable it is strong and sturdy enough to last many years . Sells for $19.94 and up.
BecoThings is also bio-degradable but sturdy and strong enough to last many years. It is made from bamboo fibers and rice husks which are sustainable materials to produce. It has a high back which helps keep litter inside. Comes in different colors. Once thrown away it will take 3-5 years to biodegrade in a landfill. I’ve seen these in pet stores and they are incredibly hard and sturdy. You can find it on Amazon starting at $24.99 and up.
The same company Beco also makes an Eco-friendly Litter Scooper of the same bio-degradable materials for just $3.29.
Sometimes, investing a little more in something that will last a lifetime (or a cat’s lifetime) is more eco-friendly than a cheaper model you will throw away every few years, even if it is made of eco-friendly materials. The Duranimals DuraScoop Cat Litter Scoop is a heavy duty corrosion-resistant aluminum scooper that won’t bend or break. It sells for just $12.99 and has over 2,000 raving 5-star reviews on Amazon.
And for throwing the poo away (especially dog owners) of course there are many bio-degradable bags available on the market. These bags work great for cat owners as well especially those who scoop daily and need to get the bag out of your home.
Do you know of any other litter boxes that are eco-friendly and not disposable? I’d love to find some more so please let me know in the comments.
I don’t know of any cat pans. But I use these poop bags http://www.flushdoggy.com/ The van ness cat pan looks promising to me.
I’m not an eco-friendly fanatic either, but I also prefer to buy eco-friendly products when I can.
I love the design of the BecoThings litter box.
