Review: Trixie Cat Food Puzzle Toy

Cats cat get bored very easily. It is important for them to get physical exercise as well as mental stimulation.

Cat food puzzles are a great way to challenge cats mentally and use their natural foraging instincts to initiate play.

I purchased this Trixie Hide-and-Seek Circle cat food puzzle. It is the first food puzzle I’ve ever bought. I was attracted to it because there are two different puzzles, one on each side. It is also extremely heavy, sturdy and well made. It says it is ‘wooden’ I’m not sure which other materials are used, but it is heavy.

Dimensions:

10×10 inches (26 cm X 26 cm)
4 pounds (11.8 kilo)

Elizabeth is much more playful. But Cornelius is more food driven and goes crazy for treats or dry food. So he was dominating this game. Elizabeth was happy to sit back and watch.

I feed home-made raw food which is impossible to use in a food puzzle. So for this I used dry kibble or treats.  I am really not a supporter of dry kibble as a primary food source. But I do use dry food as treats from time to time, they go crazy for it. Almost obsessive.

Overall opinion

I like the quality, sturdiness and look of this puzzle. I like that it has two sides to it. It is not a difficult puzzle by any means. I think any cat should be able to do this. Because my cats have small noses they really need to use their claws rather than their nose to dig out the food. So I do like this puzzle. But I am now eager to try out some more slow feeders or cat food puzzles as well as make a DIY cat food puzzle toy.

I have 2 similar ones, but Joanie hogs them all before anyone else gets a chance. Thank you for the kind words you left on my blog on the loss of my Lucy.

I tried one of those puzzle balls with my cats once. They were interested alright. For ONE DAY!!!! I even changed different treats, but apart from the young one, Ruby, my two 16 year olds didn´t find it very stimulating apparently. Maybe they´re just too old for playtime! ;)

With cats there are so many factors, age, character, time of day, hunger level and timing. i let them play with this toy half way between their last meal and the next meal so I know they will be interested and ready to work for the food. Because my cats never get dry food they react as if its a drug. It’s amazing how much they will work for just 5 small kibbles of dry food.

I am only just re-transitioning back to raw after my boy Spider developed a skin allergy caused by the veterinary diet that the vet suggested for his kidney disease. So once we’re fully back on raw with all my 3 rascals, they will probably react the same as yours to “junk food” being more exciting again! :)
