Cat scratchers are not optional, they are a necessity for every cat home. I believe they can also be multifunctional, beautiful and even an art piece.
My favorite scratcher I currently have is my Mona Lisa scratcher. I adore it so much I wanted to create another piece of art cat scratcher. This DIY bust scratcher is definitely cheeky and will be a conversation piece in any home.
My inspiration …….
And this dog cat scratcher I have always adored. It is from the same artist as my Mona Lisa.
I had been trying to think of ways I could re-create this dog cat scatcher. I have had my eye open at flea markets for a large dog statue that I could cover in rope. But I’ve never come across something that could work.
Then I thought about making a bust cat scratcher. I found this DIY about casting your own bust using duct tape. I love the personalization of it, but it seemed like too much work and may not be strong enough.
So I found this mannequin at a thrift store for about $15. It was the perfect because and had a sturdy stand.
Then all you need is a good hot glue gun and some sisal cord of your choice.
Start gluing the cord onto the bust in a pattern and direction of your choice. I started just below the boobs and followed that curve all the way down. Next I did the boobs in a circular bullseye pattern. Then I did little triangles for the area in-between the two boobs.
Tips:
- Make sure your mannequin is sturdy and stable. If it is wobbly or falls over, your cat won’t use it
- Easier to do with two people
- We used pencils to push the cord onto the glue to avoid gluing your fingers
- Use whatever color or texture of cord you wish
- Think about the pattern you want to do and where you want to start. Anything is possible!
Your solution for wrapping the sisal around the bust area works really well! I bet that the broad base of this mannequin helps to make it very sturdy.
