Today I am sharing a gorgeous Ikea Hack DIY cat climbing wall I came across on Instagram from @ETloves1982
Kallax Cat Climbing Bookcase
I love multifunctional furniture. This Kallax hack ticks all the boxes. It serves as a wall divider, bookcase, cat scratcher, climbing tree and high perch for cats to sleep and escape. And looks beautiful! What more can you ask for in one piece! Below is a note from its creator.
First of all, I love interior design and when we started investigating all the cat trees there were only a few I would have bought (but way too expensive and apart from this, we live on the Canary Islands, so, many of the companies don’t offer shipping). Another reason why we decided to make it by our own is that this way we could give a different use to one single furniture. I think it’s very important that furnitures nowadays are functional and versatile. It’s great being able to transform them and apart from the aesthetic point of view, you safe space… So, here we go… I bought double sided adhesive tape and 6 mm sisal. It’s more flexibel, even though, it took me one hour for each “section” of the shelf and had a lot of blisters on my hands ;-). My daughter Victoria helped me quite a lot twisting the sisal around the shelf. The tape didn’t really help to fix it; maybe a different kind of tape would be necessary (this one was for carpets). But the hard work and the invested time was really worth it. We are proud of the result and the most important thing, the cats absolutely love it and it still looks really great, it has not suffered any damage at all and they use it all the time!
Note: This piece was made with Ikea’s Expedit which has since been replaced with the Kallax system.
KALLAX Cat House
This is brand new to Ikea for 2019. It fits inside the KALLAX bookcase. The backside is finished so it would look good when using the KALLAX as a room divider. This is hard and sturdy and made of fiberboard like their other furniture. Size 33x33cm. This is exciting to see Ikea bring out more cat products within their regular line, aside from the LURVIG line for pets.
KNIPSA baskets from Ikea make great scratching posts as well as storage. I have had these two for several years and they are still serving Cornelius’ scratches. The Knipsa baskets fit into the Kallax system.
Have you hacked your KALLAX to make it cat-friendly? If yes, tag me @meowlifestyle on Instagram, I would love to see!
