Second only to the litter box, Scratcing posts are the most important items you cat needs. Providing places for your cats to scratch is much more important than toys or cat beds.
A cat’s need to scratch is fundamentally what makes a cat a cat. Providing them with a variety of places to scratch is the best way to protect your furniture.
In my small apartment (40 square meters) I have over 10 different places for my cats to scratch. Different cats have different preferences so it is important to provide a variety especially if you have a multi-cat home.
Different types of scratches could be:
- Vertical
- Horizantal
- Cardboard
- Sisal rope
- Trees branches / logs
- Climbing structure
- Wicker
- Banana Fiber
- Beds
* I would avoid carpet cat trees, especially if the carpet is similar to carpet in your home or on your furniture.
Multi-cat Houseolds
Because different cats have different preferences, the more cats you have the more scratchers you need. I find that Cornelius and Elizabeth have different favorite scratchers. In fact there are some that Elizabeth uses that Cornelius doesn’t touch for example. I think this is mostly due to scratching preferences, this can also be because cats are very territorial and they can “claim” certain beds or scratchers as their own.
If you are thinking, “Or you could just declaw your cat?” NO you cannot. Declawing your cat should never be an option. I had my first cat declawed and I deeply regret it. You can read about it here.
Here are the ways I incorporate cat scratchers into my home decor.
The Mona Lisa
The most epic, gorgeous and cheeky cat scratcher I have ever seen. The Mona Lisa Copycat Art Scratcher is not only a conversation piece but a beautiful home decor piece your cats will love to scratch and will only get better over time.
This scratcher is the most beautiful and luxurious scratcher I own.
Window Perch Cat Scratcher
This serves many purposes. This cardboard window perch is a scratcher, bed and provides vertical space and higher views.
DIY Vase Scratcher
I made this DIY vase scratcher years ago and it is still a favorite. Tutorial here.
Cardboard Scratchers
This cardboard scratcher from Pidan Studios is a favorite and Cornelius is often sleeping here. It is minimal and has a pretty and sturdy design. Some cats just love cardboard and Cornelius is one of them.
These round cardboard disc scratchers are incredibly useful. I place them in my bookshelf and the cats love sitting and scatching them. You can buy a pack of three for cheap and are super useful for DIY cat projects. Place them in any basket, shelf, bed, anywhere you want your cat to lay or scratch.
Table Leg Scratcher
This is from the Ikea Lurvig line, it easily attaches to a table leg.
DIY Cat Tower
This DIY Ikea hack includes coco cord and old wicker boxes for the cats to sleep and scratch.
Wicker Funiture
I am always on the lookout for wicker furniture to put my balcony. The cats love the texture and scratching it. I have a collection of wicker furniture on my balcony the cats adore.
Baskets
These baskets from Ikea double as storage and cat scratchers.
A fatcat tower is made by hicat in London. Ours is about 7 foot tall with interior compartment and covered in hessian so the cats can very easily climbup. The website is very informative and I would recommend looking at it.
